ANGELA M. B. BIAGGIO I have been working with Kohlberg’s theory since my P.h.D. dissertation at University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1967, under the supervision of Professor Robert E. Grinder. The topic was relationships among cognitive, behavioral, and emotional aspects of children’s conscience. Resulting publication was Nelsen, E., Grinder, R. E., and Biaggio, A. (see reference number 22). Returning to Brazil, I proceeded to investigate the applicability of Kohlberg’s stages to the Brazilian culture2, 3 and looked into relationships between moral judgment and other constructs such as cognitive dissonance16, 17, locus of control15, anxiety8, 9, 12, religious participation and affiliation29, Law students24, complexity of language structure27, guilt1, parental attitudes4, and other personality variables18. After that, I moved into more applied educational aspects, working with the adaptation of group discussions techniques5, 6 and the “just community” approach in Brazil10. I spent a semester at the University of Notre Dame, working with Clark Power, and learned a great deal about the “just community” approach. There I also developed an interest in ecology23 and peace22. Theoretical considerations have also been object of my interest7, 11. I just finished a book for Editora Moderna (São Paulo), entitled: Lawrence Kohlberg: Ethics and Moral Education, (forthcoming, July 2002)13, which will be the first available book about Kohlberg published in the Portuguese language. It also contains the translation of three of Kohlberg’s papers: My personal search for a universal morality; From is to Ought…; and The Return of Stage Six25. Having done my M.S. degree under Professor Julian C. Stanley in Wisconsin, I learned about measurement and developed a taste for the adaptation of tests to foreign languages and cultures26. I did an adaptation of Gibbs et al’s Sociomoral Reflective Objective Measure14; Spielberger’s State-Trait Anxiety Inventory19, 20, and the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory21; and now Rest, Narvaez, Bebeau, and Thoma’s DIT-2 (manuscript in preparation). I have been a member of AME since 1990, and I have attended the Notre-Dame, Athens – GA, and Minneapolis’meetings of this association. On a more general level, I have been involved in teaching and research in several Brazilian universities and Morehead State University (Minnesota State University at Morehead), Minnesota. I have been a member of APA since 1969 till now, I am a fellow of division 15 at APA (Educational Psychology), and I was a member of AERA, SRCD, ISSBD (for some years), and a member of Interamerican Society of Psychology, of which I was president 1991-1993. I am also president of the recently founded Brazilian Society for Developmental Psychology, and received an homage in their first meeting in 2000. In Brazil, I have also been a consultant to CAPES, FAPERGS, and CNPq (all governmental funding agencies) and senior researcher of CNPq since 1977 until now. Total of published articles: 60. Total of papers presented at scientific meetings: 110. References 1 - Biaggio, A. M. B. (1969). Internalized versus externalized guilt: A cross-cultural study.
